A drone show is a choreographed light display consisting of many synchronized LED drones that create three-dimensional formations and moving images in the night sky. With the help of specialized software, the drones follow precisely programmed flight paths and together form visual scenes, logos, or abstract animations.

Lunatx flies the IO Star 3 by Drotek, developed and manufactured in France. The software-based control environment is part of Drotek’s IO Star system. At the Lunatx LAB, we develop our own hardware solutions for the operator station, as well as tools and workflows for show design, formation planning, 3D previews and music synchronisation.

Lunatx drone pilots – experienced, trained and qualified for professional swarm operations.

Our remote pilots and technical crew train regularly at our airfield in Düsseldorf and work with the same systems used in live productions. During a show, the swarm is monitored in real time via the Ground Control Station, while each drone follows its pre-programmed flight path.

Technical training, operational experience and clearly defined procedures are integral to every Lunatx drone show.

Our remote pilots hold the competency certificates required under EU Regulation 2019/947, as well as the EU Remote Pilot Certificate A2. Every drone show is conducted as an operation in the Specific Category, based on a project-specific risk assessment and our operational authorisation issued by the German Federal Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt). The cost of a professional drone show depends on the fleet size, creative and technical requirements, venue and additional show elements. Bespoke Lunatx drone shows generally start in the mid-five-figure budget range.

The most important factors affecting the price of a drone show are:

  • Number of drones – professional productions generally start at around 350 drones; around 700 drones are a particularly effective fleet size for many larger events, and shows with 1,000+ drones are also possible.
  • Customized show or existing concept – individually developed drone shows require greater creative and technical effort.
  • Location of the event – Travel expenses for the team and equipment, as well as special environmental conditions, influence planning.

How does a drone show work?

A drone show is based on precise pre-programming and operational monitoring. Before the event, each drone is assigned an individually defined flight path, which it follows throughout the show.

During the show, the drones communicate with a central Ground Control Station. With a full RTK fix and suitable conditions, RTK-GNSS positioning can achieve accuracy of up to one centimetre, supported by a project-specific base station and a reliable data connection.

Experienced pilots and trained technicians monitor the drone show in real time to ensure safe, smooth operation and guarantee the safety of the audience at all times.

Is a drone show safe?

Yes. Professional drone shows are planned with project-specific flight and safety areas, technical safeguards and clearly defined operating procedures. Lunatx uses the IO Star 3 system with RTK-GNSS positioning, redundant communication links, Geoguard and an independent Flight Termination System (FTS).

Preflight checks, weather monitoring and the defined safety systems are checked before take-off. Lunatx conducts drone shows in the Specific Category under European drone regulations, based on an operational authorisation issued by the German Federal Aviation Authority (Luftfahrt-Bundesamt).

The right fleet size depends on the imagery, viewing distance, desired physical scale, location and budget. Is it possible to launch a drone show in the rain?

Yes. Rain does not automatically rule out a drone show. The IO Star 3 systems used by Lunatx are designed for professional outdoor use; we can fly even in heavy rain with precipitation rates of up to 7 mm per hour.

What wind conditions are suitable for a drone show?

For the safe and stable operation of a drone show, wind speeds of up to 9 m/s can be accommodated without issue. Within this range, our systems ensure precise flight stability and reliable choreography. (As of August 2026)

How long does it take to organise a drone show?

The earlier you enquire about a drone show, the more scope there is for concept development, site assessment and coordination. There is no universal minimum lead time.

How long does a drone show last?

Most Lunatx drone shows last around 15 to 20 minutes. Shorter and longer shows are also possible, depending on the choreography, flight movements, energy requirements, temperature and wind.

The technical maximum flight time and a suitable show duration are not the same thing. The final duration is determined for each project, allowing for the required safety reserve.

Is it permissible for a drone show to fly over people?

A professional Lunatx drone show is not flown over people. Flight areas, audience areas and the necessary safety zones are defined for each project based on the location and risk assessment. Learn more about safety distances and operational planning.

Do our drones cause air pollution or noise?

Drone shows can be a lower-emission alternative to traditional pyrotechnic productions. Our show drones are manufactured in France and powered by rechargeable batteries. The Ground Control Station also runs on battery packs on site, supported by solar panels, so the show operation itself produces no local exhaust emissions.

During flight, the drones operate comparatively quietly and leave no pyrotechnic residue. Manufacturing, transport and crew travel are not included in this assessment of the show operation. (As of August 2026)

Do drone shows pose a danger to animals?

Professionally conducted drone shows are planned in such a way as to minimize risks to animals. Our drones fly at a speed that allows flying animals to perceive and avoid them in time, thus preventing collisions.

The creation of a drone light show is carried out in close collaboration with our creative team. Together, we develop a concept based on your ideas and requirements. The show is refined in several rounds of feedback until the desired result is achieved.
