The AFC Asian Cup ranks among Asia’s most prestigious major sporting events. Even before the first teams stepped onto the pitch, the stage was set for an impressive opening ceremony, designed by Lunatx SFX with a pyrotechnic show of exceptional technical and dramaturgical sophistication.

The Lunatx LAB developed a comprehensive effects concept that integrated both the architecture of Lusail Stadium and the artistic vision of the creative direction. On the day of the opening, the arena was transformed into an atmospheric Gesamtkunstwerk of light and finely calibrated special effects, choreographed down to the smallest detail. With hundreds of precisely synchronised firing points and multi-layered aerial visuals, the effects created a dynamic opening for a tournament watched by millions of viewers worldwide.

Implementation in — or rather above — Lusail Stadium presented particular challenges due to its curved structure and high roofline. In addition, Qatar’s extreme climatic conditions required an even more rigorous selection of materials to ensure the reliable performance of all effects.

Despite these challenges, we delivered a show at the very highest technical level — precise, safe and visually powerful. The result was an opening ceremony that captivated audiences both in the stadium and on screens worldwide, once again demonstrating the outstanding capabilities of German effects and pyrotechnic engineering.
