Three Drone Shows for the Grand Finale in the Rheinaue

When one chapter ends, the sky keeps writing.

As Rhein in Flammen 2026 took place in Bonn’s Rheinaue for the very last time, Lunatx SFX had the honor of becoming part of a historic weekend. For the 40th anniversary of the iconic large-scale event, we realized three drone shows above Bonn – embedded within one of Germany’s largest open-air festivals.

Tens of thousands of visitors experienced a weekend filled with music, fireworks, light art and modern drone technology. Together with the City of Bonn, a multimedia production emerged between memory, farewell and the future.

With a total of 702 synchronized drones, the large main show on Saturday evening told a visual “Best of 40 Years of Rhein in Flammen” – choreographed to music, pyrotechnics and emotional moments from four decades of event history. As the visual highlight of the festival weekend, the drone show became a unifying moment between visitors, memories and the long-standing history of the event.

Three Drone Shows above Bonn

Already on Friday evening, the first drone show under the motto “Ludwig Travels Around the World” opened the festival weekend. The specially developed sky production combined Bonn’s cultural identity with modern 3D light formations and told the story of Ludwig van Beethoven’s journey through a variety of visual worlds in the night sky.

On Saturday, Lunatx welcomed the traditional ship convoy on the Rhine with a glowing greeting above the Rheinaue. Shortly afterwards, the large anniversary show followed as the emotional highlight of the weekend: a large-scale drone show with 702 drones, combined with fireworks and synchronized music, transformed the sky above Bonn into a visual journey through 40 years of Rhein in Flammen.

The shows were fully timecode-synchronized and precisely coordinated with music, pyrotechnics and the overall event dramaturgy.

Drone show and fireworks as one immersive overall experience

The anniversary production impressively demonstrated how modern drone technology and classic fireworks can merge into one shared show experience.

While vibrant pyrotechnics illuminated the sky, hundreds of synchronized drones created dynamic light formations, three-dimensional motifs and emotional scenes above Bonn’s Rheinaue. The combination of music, light, movement and fireworks created an immersive experience for thousands of spectators along the Rhine riverbank.

Especially in the context of the 40th anniversary, this created an extraordinary connection between tradition and future technology.

Weather-resistant Drone Shows under demanding conditions

Despite rain and thunderstorms in the afternoon, all three drone shows of the weekend were carried out completely successfully – with 100% of all drones in the air.

For large-scale open-air events, weather stability, redundancies and technical reliability are crucial factors. Especially under demanding conditions, the importance of professional systems, precise planning and safe operational procedures becomes evident.

The shows in Bonn impressively demonstrated the capabilities of modern show drone systems for urban large-scale events and complex live productions.
