The Eurovision Song Contest is one of the most complex and far-reaching live television productions in the world. Each year, an international audience of millions follows the interplay of music, stage design, lighting, and visual staging. Lunatx SFX was responsible for the execution of pyrotechnics and special effects at five editions of the contest: Basel (2025), Copenhagen (2014), Baku (2012), Düsseldorf (2011), and Athens (2006). Each of these productions presented distinct technical, architectural, and dramaturgical challenges, requiring a precise, safety-driven, and camera-focused approach.

With the Eurovision Song Contest 2025, the competition returned to Switzerland. In Basel’s St. Jakobshalle, a modern indoor production was created in which effects were used with restraint to support musical highlights. The pyro and special effects realized by Lunatx SFX were closely aligned with the stage design, camera axes, and direction, integrating in a controlled manner into the overall picture of an international live broadcast.

The former shipyard hall B&W Hallerne provided an exceptional setting for the Eurovision Song Contest 2014. The stage was centrally integrated into a water basin, combining large-scale LED elements with a clear geometric design language. Absolutely exceptional: 200 cubes made of dimmable plexiglass defined the stage design, each of them serving as an individual pyro position. Pyrotechnic accents and special effects were precisely embedded into this architecture, enhancing spatial depth and supporting the show’s dramaturgical development without disrupting the visual calm of the design.

Transparent layers, expansive LED surfaces, and clear lines defined the visual appearance. The Eurovision Song Contest 2011 took place in a football stadium for the first time, reaching new dimensions in both audience size and production scale. The stage was designed to be compact in order to create a sense of proximity despite the stadium setting. Extensive pyro and flame effects accompanied the show, conceived to perform with precision and control both in the venue and on television, under changing weather conditions and strict safety requirements.

At the Olympic Indoor Hall in Athens, the Eurovision Song Contest 2006 featured a technically demanding stage with numerous moving elements. Pyrotechnics and special effects had to be precisely coordinated with the stage mechanics, lighting design, and live show operations. The effects were applied selectively to reinforce musical accents and to clearly structure the visual dramaturgy of the performance.
